Good afternoon, James:
Thank you for the time and attention given to me and the other attendees of the most recent Level 1 & 2 at Barbour Creek Shooting School.
Having attended five other branded long range shooting schools over the last 4 years, I put your content and attention to detail as the best learning and live fire shooting experience for anyone looking for a quality instructional environment.
Your method of reading the wind and being able to teach anyone - regardless of experience / shooting expertise - how to arrive a gradient of 1/4 minute wind calls out past 1000 yards is unmatched anywhere else in long-range shooting experiences.
Having spent four days learning your approach in the classroom, then being able to duplicate it on the square range or using life size animal targets with life sized reactive vitals is a learning / practice experience no other school matches here in North America.
We had a wide range of individual capabilities in the four-day experience and each participant came away with confidence as well as a solid repeatable method on how to improve on first round ethical hits on target at any hunting distance.
I will recommend the experience you offer to anyone seeking how to shoot better at longer distances....any distance.
Many thanks and I look forward to attending your schools again soon,
Jim E

The BCSS is on a large piece of land in EuFaula, Alabama. It has a few central buildings including an office, ktichen, dining area, and four rooms for boarding, and a separate house for overflow (I was overflow, so I stayed in the house). There is a shooting area that includes standard targets and life-size animals with highlighted killing zones over a bit more then 1000 yards. The animal targets are really well done--the killing areas are basically hung behind cutouts in the target and are white, so they both mark and swing when you hit them. There is a heated and air conditioned shooting house that you shoot from, with big cutouts for both bench shooting and prone shooting. It is ridiculously nice. All shooting is done with school-made rifles, 6.5cm, suppressed, so no or little hearing protection is required (I wore plugs, about half of the people did). There is a separate classroom near the shooting house.
I took the two day Level One class, and to give context, I am probably more of a beginner then anyone reading this. I had never shot beyond 100 yards. There is also a level two class that goes into more realistic hunting situations. Each day started with breakfast (I won't repeat this, but all food was excellent), then class from 9-12. The first day focused a lot on equipment and reading the wind, the second on ballistics and hunting related issues. The instructor (James Eagleman) is ex-military sniper/instructor, and was great. He noted that they don't take money from anyone so feel comfortable just telling you what they think about specific manufacturers, and did. I came away learning a great deal from both days.
The highlight was the afternoons spent shooting. Though I was probably the most inexperienced shooter, the rest of the class was also new to this--they were mostly hunters who viewed 300 yards as crazy long. We all laughed when James said we would start at 400 yards, as anything shorter was too easy. But we did, and he was right. Day 1 was spent doing bench shooting, using nice front rests and bags with ears. As soon as you were willing to trust the equipment, and listen to his wind calls, you hit everything, including 3.5" clay pigeons at 1000 yards (in a few tries). It was pretty shocking. We learned to use Sig rangefinders with applied ballistics for this.
Day two was using a bipod and more simple rectangle shooting bag. This is what I was really interested in--could I do this without the rest? First shot, prone, perfect hit on the 1000 yard out elk. I was as surprised as I was happy. We finished that day shooting other rifles they made, including 6.5 prc and 300 prc. It was fun. You could also shoot your own rifles during this time.
I should note, as you probably all know, reading the wind is the hardest part. He would help us with this, having us look through his spotting scope when it really captured mirage, but warned us that this was not something you learned in two days, it took a lot of practice. Shooting was done in pairs (shooter/spotter) so you got time to work on it, but I would not expect to leave the course with that mastered. It was a good start, though.
In summary, I would guess just about anyone reading this would have a great time at the course--it really was a lot of fun, and the area was a really nice place to spend a few days. Everyone at the class with me said they learned a great deal--to a person, after day one they said "I could leave now and got more then my money's worth", and day 2 was in many ways better. Given my experienced, I would say that no one should feel that they are too inexperienced for it. Maybe if taking 1000 yard shots is like brushing your teeth it might not be much help, but for you there is level 2.
I can't recommend it enough. When I can I will return for level 2.

I had very high expectations before coming to James Course at Barbour creek but after completing Level 1 & 2 this past week, you exceeded all expectations. I have been hunting and shooting for nearly 50 years, but never felt comfortable taking a shot further than 350 yards. Now, that distance is truly a chip shot after consistently hitting targets at over 1500 yards on the Level 2 range. The methods you teach resonate with the most experienced of hunters and shooters as well as the novice who may have just taken up the sport. The instruction by James was second to none. James’ attention to detail was amazing and because of the small class size, he was able to give each student the individual attention we needed to learn how to read wind accurately. The hospitality of every member of the staff, the great food, comfortable lodging, updated firearms, ballistic rangefinders and equipment, together with state of the art ranges and a climate controlled shoot house at Barbour Creek made this week an experience I will not soon forget. I leave Barbour Creek a much better shooter and hunter than before my arrival.
Thank you for giving me the confidence to take ethical shots at distances far beyond what I ever thought possible. I cannot thank you and the professionals at Barbour Creek enough for making my experience a once in a lifetime
I was a school teacher for over 30 years and i have. been to a lot of different work shops, but none could compare to the level one class that I attended nov.2023. James explained everything so I could understand the information and then we had an opportunity to apply the material that we learned. I do not think the class could be improved. Hats off to James

The rooms were incredible, and James is simply the best instructor that you can get anywhere!! I have shot all of my life, and learned more about long range shooting in the 2 days I was there, than I had throughout my entire life. I would call this the benchmark school in the US. Thanks James, Jeremy, Mary, and all of the Barbour Creek Staff. What an incredible vacation!! Send it!!!!
Worth every bit of time and money spent. Learned so much and left shooting out to 1000 yards on golf balls. Proof of the new skills learned were exercised in Wyoming this year too

Not really a negative. Thanks

Hi,
I just wanted to thank you for the great Long Range 1 course you taught last week. Prior to signing up I had heard that your course was more advanced than others with the same title. I had no idea how much more advanced (yet still understandable) it would be. Previously, it would take me numerous wasted shots to hit a small target at 1,000 yards … I would have to use the trial and error "walk it in" method. After learning your proprietary wind calling technique and using the Eagle ballistic app, I hit 1,000 yards on my 1st attempt on the 1st day of the course. I repeated that unbelievable (for me anyway) performance on the 2nd day, proving that day 1 was not just luck.
In addition to the value provided by your material, your skill and attention as an instructor was greatly appreciated. You personally made sure that no student was left behind and took the extra time to personally assist students overcome any problems.
I intend to sign up for Long Range 2 as soon as possible and highly recommend your course (and the Eagle Ballistic app) to any shooters/hunters that want to hit that small 1,000 yard target consistently.
Once again, thanks for the kind attention you provided for all us students.

James‘s experience with not only the subject matter, but with teaching itself is invaluable I won’t go into his win technique, but it is second to none and everybody will tell you that wind is what gets you all the rest is just math. Their accommodations were wonderful, the food was awesome, and everyone there was a pleasure to meet. I look forward to using what I’ve learned and going back for level two I may even take level one again as a refresher right before level two. I emailed Jim, and said I needed to know what I don’t know and I think that was important. I am basically self educated in long range shooting, but after this class, I have to agree with Jim,. long range doesn’t start until 625 yards, and I do indeed consider that a chip shot now, so if you’ve been on the fence, do yourself a favor book with Jim, and you will not be disappointed
I just returned from Level one and Level two at Barbour Creek and wanted to leave a review. I just returned from Level one and Level two at Barbour Creek and wanted to leave a review. I come from a Law Enforcement sniper background, and as such I have studied long range shooting for decades. I think I learned more in 4 days with James than I had accumulated up to that point, and that is after having attended an FBI sniper course, as well as one special forces sniper course many years ago.
The depth of wind knowledge alone is worth the price of admission, and the app that James has developed is astounding in its capabilities. I have been a diehard Applied Ballistics guy for years now, and honestly, I'll keep using it, but the Eagle Ballistics app performs the same functions, and a whole lot more. This course is heavy on theory, but much heavier on real world practice. Prior to last week I wouldn't have bothered to shoot at a clay pigeon at 1000 yards, but after having done it, I now see that with the right equipment and knowledge base it is well within my capabilities.
The facilities are perfect for the instruction offered, and the accommodations are very comfortable. We had a great group of shooters in class, and everyone got along well.
I would offer two pieces of advice for anyone going. First, if your lifestyle is dependent on internet access you're going to have problems. Cell service is spotty, and the internet service is even less reliable. I'm taking some classes and had counted on studying while at Barbour Creek, but that was virtually impossible. I did make arrangements with the office staff to take a couple tests after hours, and they were more than accommodating.
Secondly, the ability to read mirage is heavily dependent on quality glass. The spotting scopes provided by the school are barely adequate, and fortunately for me and my partner I brought along my Swarovski 95mm BTX. That made all the difference, and by the end of the week several students were actively shopping for one. A high-end fixed spotting scope at 30-35X is best suited for the school and the skills taught there. James isn't necessarily happy with the optical equipment available, but it is not up to him what is provided to students.
Lastly, if you do go, there is a lovely woman named Mary who does all the cooking and takes care of the rooms. Please consider tipping her at the end of the school. She works as hard as anyone there and always has a smile on her face.
My shooting partner and I are already planning on going back next year for a refresher.
General:
We stayed on-site for a small additional charge. I highly recommend that you do so as it gives more time to visit with the other students and instructors. The accommodations were comfortable and the food was very good. The school is located about 15 minutes outside Eufala.

Level 1 Course
This course was two days, taught by James Eagleman. James is former sniper with a strong background in math and physics. He marries shooting math and physics to produce what is likely the most accurate long range shooting approach in existence. The Level 1 course is all about learning his technique for reading wind with shots from 550 to 1,000 yards. I won't spill the beans, but his wind reading approach uses mirage and rain to a level of accuracy that is truly incredible. In the level 1 course you will use school rifles which are Barbour Creek suppressed 6.5 Creedmoors with Track scopes. To give you a sense of how good this technique is, at the conclusion of the school, each shooter is required to make three kill shots on each target from 550 to 1,000. @cbvanb and I both cleaned the course with 18 kill shots and no misses. We called the wind for each other and obviously got it correct!
The level 1 course included James' ballistic app. I went into this thinking that I would learn from the course but continue to use the applied ballistics app. Man was I wrong. James' app is so far superior to applied ballistics that there is absolutely no way I was staying with the old app. You can actually use James' app to correct the inherent errors in the other app!
Level 2 Course
This course was also two days but was held in hill/canyon country to produce cross/quartering/following and frontal wind shots in heavily contoured terrain. Shots ranged from 550 yard to a mile. In all honesty, the 6.5 CM becomes unstable beyond about 1,450. My 6.5 PRC with a better bullet selection would have been capable of hits to a mile. Lesson learned!
The highlight of this class was a shot I called for @cbvanb. It was 1,450. I gave him the holdover, read the wind, and told him to push right 9 MOA. He centered the bullseye. At that point James Eagleman just grinned, gave us the thumbs up, and said 'you guys get this stuff!' We were both very consistent in various wind conditions to 1,450 with hits made to 1,550. With adjustments we are making to our equipment, I am looking forward to going back and making that one mile shot!
Thoughts:
I have no interest in hunting at these ranges. However, this school made me a much better shot. At this point, 600 yards is a chip shot with my 6.5 PRC.
If you are interested in this school, invest in a very good spotting scope. Mid grade scopes like Leopold just do not have what it takes to read mirage effectively. @cbvanb and I shared his Swarovski BTX 30x90. It was outstanding. James uses a Swarovski BTX 30x65. I have just purchased a Swarovski BTX 30x65 for my own work.
The 6.5 Creedmoor gets a lot of crap. I was absolutely amazed at the capability of this round at range. Note, the school does not promote this round for long range hunting, stating that it is realistically limited by energy to somewhere around 800 yards.
Bullet stability is a critical factor. I was using the 143 gr Nosler AB LR. This bullet loses stability at about 1,300 yards in my rifle. I have switched to the 143 gr Norma Bondstrike. This bullet is stable to a mile. James' app calculates bullet stability.
If you enjoy pushing yourself, consider this school!
I attended at the end of June this year, what appealed to me about this program was the sincerity of all the Personel, and I can say that is the way the entire staff really is when you get there
There is no smoke and mirrors, if you pay attention you will learn Mr. Eaglemans method of reading wind not to mention many other shooting tips

Instruction, instructor, staff, facility, classroom, meals, and service were all 5 star. If you want to learn how to take the step from hunting confidently at 300 yards to 600/700 yards, the course will exceed expectations. You will successfully shoot 1000 yard targets in only two days. Look forward to going back for more instruction. Money well invested.
WOW, if you are thinking of shooting long range this is the place to go.
